A note on recruiting and hiring
Unless specified, all positions in my group are open to Canadian citizens and international applicants. It is useful to note whether an applicant is a Canadian citizen/permanent resident or international because some grants and award opportunities are based on residence status.
We welcome applicants of all genders, races, sexualities, religions, those with disabilities and neurodivergence, those from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and those with family obligations. We aim to create a workspace where all feel welcome and comfortable to be themselves, understanding that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work for different people with different life experiences. Edmonton is a great, progressive city to live in at lower cost-of-living than most cities of its size in Canada. The University of Alberta is situated on Treaty 6 territory, traditional lands of First Nations and Métis people. The North Saskatchewan River, which is only a few hundred meters from the chemistry building, is an important traditional gathering place and transportation route for many Indigenous peoples.
I will not respond to emails from potential students or postdocs who don’t tailor their email to me and state why they’re interested in my research program in particular.
Graduate Students
MSc or PhD
Unless we have already communicated, I do not have any openings in my group for 2025.
The application deadline is February 1 for graduate students aiming to begin their program in September. The Department website has details on how to apply: https://www.ualberta.ca/chemistry/graduate-program/how-to-apply
If you have any questions about the process, please direct them to the department (contact info at the link above).
An important detail about our department is that we admit graduate students to the program prior to students choosing a supervisor, although it’s best to have a few professors in mind whom you’d like to study with. This allows us to find suitable matches between students, their research interests and abilities, and current projects available in the department.
Undergrads
There will be openings for summer 2025 (likely 1-2).
Students interested in research for credit (299, 399, 401, 403, 499) can contact me directly.
For both, please email me with a copy of your transcript (unofficial is sufficient), resume/CV, and explain in the email why you’d like to work with me. It is advantageous to have completed CHEM 303 and 305, and is unusual to accept students to my group who have not completed CHEM 211 and 213.
Postdocs
There are currently no openings for postdocs, however, if you are interesting in applying for a fellowship together, please contact me with your CV and a statement of research interests and career goals.
